A few weeks ago Idaho Senator Larry Craig's name was all over the news. Why? Apparently he was engaging in lewd conduct in a restroom stall. Now here is the fun part: it was the tapping of his feet that led a police officer to decide Sen. Craig was gay, and that this was a signal in the gay community.
Now, my boyfriend works in a pretty large office building and when he walked into the restroom Tuesday afternoon, his eyes were not pleased to find a grown man standing in front of the mirror with his pants down to his knees. The man then giggles and says "I'm sorry," and my boyfriend proceeds to enter a stall. At this point, the half-unclad man begins to whistle and then tap his feet. We had decided that perhaps the man's pants were not on because he was trying to tuck his shirt in, but even then, pants do not go that far down, nor would one start whistling and tapping and sticking around for as long as he did.
Neither of us are sure what to think of this encounter--is the tapping indeed, just tapping? Or is the media altering our perception and understanding of these actions? Either way, I was hoping that someone in such a professional setting would have enough common sense not to be so "free" in an office restroom.

How gross! I find it very rude that anyone would use a public restroom and be so crude. I am not convinced though that tapping of the foot is a homosexual signal. I would almost bet this man had heard the news and was merely "joking" around. Who would find this joke amusing, I am not sure. Thankfully, your boyfriend will never know whether this was a joke or a come on, but it is horrible that professional environments are subject to such crass behavior.
I know that some people suffer from the enjoyment of exposing themselves in public I am baffled anytime I hear something like this! Why would anyone want to show themselves in such a way, it’s odd! I am pretty sure that the connection between homosexuality and exposing yourself in public is fairly weak. I have quite a few gay friends and have never once heard one of them express the need or desire to expose themselves, without beer, in public. There is the possibility that they are ashamed and are just not telling the truth about what they do when they are away from me, but I still think it’s hard to imagine that they are doing that. Now the tapping, that’s interesting. You’ll have to keep us posted as to whether or not y’all run into any other “tappers.” There could be a link. Very interesting happenings.
